extractive distillation column

Chemical explanation of extractive distillation Extractive distillation is a special type of separation process where a single stage carries out the separation of a mixture of high relative volatility without the need for including a holdup problem or a high pressure drop. This column makes things like chemicals or fuels cleaner and purer by removing the parts we don’t want. Now, let's see how extractive distillation works and learn how it benefits us.

Put more simply, extractive distillation works by a liquid (a solvent) aiding in the separation of components from a mixture. Pretend you've got a giant bowl of fruit salad where there are a bunch of different kinds of fruit all mixed up together. The fruits are just as the various ingredients of a liquid mixture. When we dump the salad into the extractive distillation column, the solvent is our Felix Felicis, our Mickey Mouse magic wand, and it will help us sort the fruits into different bowls based on their types. That way we can have pure fruit bowls without any combination happening.

Improving separation efficiency with extractive distillation columns

nEthane extraction distillation columns contain dozens of trays, are tall and looktower-like. There’s a special job for each level to do in separating the liquids. As the mixture climbs the column, the solvent helps the parts of it we don’t want grab hold while the pure stuff keeps on climbing. This process continues until we have all the pure liquids together at the top. Both the separation and the time and energy are saved by this faster process through use of extractive distillation columns.
